Dometic Cooling Units – Troubleshooting and Repair

Dometic cooling units are a necessity for campervans and vans, as they help keep food and drinks fresh while you’re on the road. However, like any appliance, the fridge can run into issues from time to time. Some problems are easy to fix, while others may require professional repair or replacement.

Fridge Troubleshooting

The most common issue with Dometic refrigerators is a faulty thermostat or thermistor, which communicates temperature changes to the refrigerator’s circuit board. You can test a Dometic thermistor by disconnecting it from the refrigerator and placing it in a glass of ice water. It should have a resistance reading of between 7,000 and 10,000 ohms. If it’s higher than that, the thermistor is bad and needs to be replaced.

Another common fridge problem is a faulty or broken seal, which can prevent air from circulating and cause the fridge to overheat. This is why it’s important to keep the fridge closed as much as possible while you’re traveling, and to check the seal periodically for cracks or wear and tear. If you do notice a broken seal, it’s important to get it fixed right away to avoid spoiled food and expensive repairs down the road.

If your refrigerator is leaking or not keeping food cold, it’s likely the result of an issue with the refrigerator’s boiler. This can be caused by a faulty thermistor or by water that has gotten into the boiler and caused rust. Regardless of the reason, a failed boiler will lead to that telltale ammonia smell and leaking water. The good news is that a Dometic or Norcold refrigerator can be repaired by replacing the evaporator coil, thermistor, and/or boiler box.

Nordic Refrigerator Cooling Units are fully remanufactured using the highest quality materials and workmanship. Their unique rebuilding process uses heavier wall seamless tubing and a better designed boiler, which resists thermal stress and failure. In addition, the remanufacturing process includes a computerized calibration of the charge solution ensuring an optimal chemical density and superior performance. The result is a cooler that works better and lasts longer than original equipment.
